May 12 is a day set aside to raise awareness about a condition that not only affects people’s exercise abilities, but also can be debilitating in many other facets of daily living: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME).
CFS is often diagnosed when other causes of fatigue, such as sleep apnea and narcolepsy, have been ruled out, according to information from the Centers for Disease Control.
There are many possible symptoms of CFS, but the primary one is chronic, unexplained fatigue and/or the inability to achieve restorative sleep. The drastic lowering of stamina can affect all activities of daily living, depending on severity.
Changes to daily routine
Treatment of CFS requires the collaboration of your doctor and other health professionals. One common area of treatment is changes to one’s daily routine, including establishing a very regular sleep schedule, avoiding stimulants like caffeine, and practicing light exercise and stretches about four hours before bedtime to improve sleep.
Finding the right level of exercise
One of our beliefs at ACTIVEnABLE is that exercising is for everyone. With CFS, as with many other conditions, it is important to achieve a balance so that you maintain a healthy level of activity, but without over-exerting yourself.
Our OPTP Pro-Roller Soft Pink could be a very beneficial stretching and relaxation tool for you or a loved one who has CFS. Made of a cross-linked, closed-cell construction for a soft and stable massaging support, this foam roller is an excellent way to do light stretches and wind down to prepare for a healthy night’s sleep.
The softness of this compression roller makes balancing easier, especially when in the supine position. Massaging tight muscles in the back, arms and legs relaxes the body and may help prepare the body for sleep.
It is also a way to maintain the level of activity needed when experiencing low levels of stamina. The soft roller is perfect for those just starting out or experimenting with this exercise technique.
Celebrate CFS Awareness Day by wearing blue and by sharing stories and strategies of friends and family who have the condition. Happy CFS Awareness Day!
