Staying Active With Parkinson's Disease

As your Parkinson's disease progresses over time, it is important for you to maintain as much activity and a normal life as possible. Here are some tips for you to keep in mind:

How to Maintain Your Emotional Well-Being

Living with PD will bring all sorts of emotions, and managing your feelings about what is happening to you is as important as taking care of your physical body. There are many good support groups to help you to cope with the emotional challenges of living with PD. Many PD advocacy groups may be able to refer you to support groups in your city.

Watch out for any signs that you are becoming clinically depressed, which includes loss of appetite, feelings of hopelessness and inability to sleep, or a tendency to sleep all day.

Stay Active With Hobbies and Interests

Hobbies are a vital part of a happy life, and they should stay a priority when you have PD. Be sure to make time for your various interests and hobbies. If your disease symptoms or medications interfere with your hobbies, be sure to tell your doctor.

To continue to enjoy your hobbies and activities, remember:

  • Bring a buddy with you to help as needed.
  • Buy adaptive equipment if available for your activity.
  • Get new hobbies - New hobbies may not be as physically demanding.

Working with PD

Many PD patients still work as they need to for financial reasons. It also helps to maintain a feeling of self worth and independence. Many people can continue to work, as long as they arrange their workspace efficiently. Also many PD patients are able to arrange reduced hours or alternative work arrangements.

Be sure to address workplace accommodations with your supervisor, as the Americans with Disabilities Act requires employers to make reasonable attempts to make allowances for your condition.
